GIS unease

THERE ARE REPORTS of unrest at the Government Industrial School (GIS) at Barrows, St Lucy.

A source told the MIDWEEK NATION that female wards were on edge following an investigation by the Ministry of Home Affairs into a letter which was published about the institution on a popular Facebook page. Reports indicated that some girls attempted to escape on Monday night.

The GIS is a reform school for teenaged girls and boys. They are usually detained for periods ranging from one to five years. The boys are housed separately at Dodds, St Philip.

Sources said the girls had been “acting up” after two staff members – a supervisor with over 20 years’ experience and an employee who worked in the kitchen – were suspended last week pending investigations into the information which was published on the social website, and allegations made against them by one of the wards.
