MORE THAN 5 000 summonses continue to pile up in the cabinets of the District “A” Magistrates’ Court and with them the growing frustration of one Bridgetown magistrate, who complained about “lazy” marshals.

Magistrate Graveney Bannister spoke openly in the Bridgetown court yesterday over a year-old “perennial problem” of marshals of the court failing to serve summonses in a timely fashion.

“The issue of non-serving has been raised on several occasions and in several quarters,” he said, adding that complaining had been to no avail.

He was speaking at one of the court’s call days for 130 alleged offenders. However, only 21 people were present. Magistrate Bannister expressed dismay at the ongoing situation, charging that no real effort was being made to serve the documents that were so vital to the court’s functioning. (TKS)
