DEAR CHRISTINE: At my wit’s end over NIS cheque

DEAR CHRISTINE, I AM WRITING to you because I have a problem and no one is taking me seriously.

The Government gets on the television and radio and says that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) does not have a problem with money but it needs to tell people the truth, September is a year that I have been waiting for money from this department.

My electricity, water and gas are off.

I have no food in my house and my rent is in arrears at the Country Towers apartment, which is owned by the same Government on whom I am waiting for the necessary funds that I need to make ends meet.

I have been told the problem was the computer; then they told me they were waiting on an email. Since then, I have been informed they are waiting on a paper to put on my file. How much more do I have to put up with before I can get my money? I was told I have until mid-week to pay the rent. How can I pay the rent if they are withholding my funds?

I was forced to visit the doctor recently and my blood pressure has escalated from all the stress. I do not know what else to do or who to turn to. I am at my wits’ end.

Dear J,

My advice is that you pay a visit to your Constituency Council’s office and share your concerns and frustrations with officers there. Make sure you also put your concerns in writing, date the letter and keep a copy for yourself. Clearly, someone there must be able to act on your behalf.

A year is a mighty long time to be waiting for NIS benefits. If there is any consolation, know that you are not alone.

My findings have shown that while Government officials have stated there are no financial issues at the NIS, there are financial issues with which the Government is dealing.

In the meantime, I will see what assistance can be given to help with food items.

Hang in there.

– CHRISTINE
