THE NEED TO HAVE the island’s schools “up to scratch” and conducive to learning has been emphasised by Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave.
As he visited St Martin’s Mangrove Primary School in St Philip yesterday, Sir Elliott said he noted with some regret the condition of the general assembly hall, which had been allowed to fall into disrepair.
While adding that there were plans to carry out some major refurbishments sometime next year, he implored St Philip Members of Parliament, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite and Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick, to continue to press Cabinet colleagues to see that funds were allocated to do the job.
“How can you expect teachers to give of their best when conditions under which they have to work are not up to scratch? How can you expect students to produce outstanding work under conditions which are not conducive to such production?” he asked.
