NUPW: Time to up pay

AFTER HOLDING STRAIN for six years, public workers are going after a salary increase from the Freundel Stuart administration.

Highly-placed sources within the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) revealed yesterday that a Salaries, Wages and Allowances Committee had been established. Its function was to come up with the salary demand for civil servants and to formulate a plan for how Government could possibly afford the increase, as well as to lead negotiations on behalf of the NUPW.

The size of the proposed increase is being closely held by the union.

The island’s largest public sector union, which has had a tension-filled relationship with Government since a new union executive was elected earlier this year, has already signalled its intention to negotiate a pay hike.

The DAILY NATION was informed that officials from the union paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister earlier this week and informed him of their need for an increase.
