KIM HOLDER still rules women road tennis in Barbados.
The robust Holder defeated the slim Rachel Smith 21-10, 17-21, 21-14 to win the first Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Monarchs Of The Court Sunday night at the Flow Sports Club, Wildey, to claim a first prize of $4 000.
Holder, who has not lost a final in over ten years, took early control of the first game, establishing leads of 13-3 and 19-7 before a determined Smith rattled off three successive points to silence the crowd’s chants for a sow. After losing that game, Smith found her range in the second to match scores from four right up to eight.
Employing a soft serve into Holder’s backhand, Smith was able to blunt the fiery counters from her opponent. It was only in going for broke that Smith served away a number of times to see Holder creep back to 10-12.
