Fisheries officials probing sea egg drop

After 11 days, the sea egg population appears to have taken such a hit that fisheries officials are investigating.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries was forced to look into the levels of the white sea urchins on the island’s south and south-east coasts, after the lifting of an 11-year ban allowed divers to harvest them from October 1 to 31.

Chief Fisheries Officer Stephen Willoughby confirmed to the SUNDAY SUN that an investigation into low levels of sea eggs was been undertaken.

 “We are presently conducting our own investigations to determine that [the low levels of sea eggs]. The seas have been rough and have slowed down that process somewhat, but we are conducting our own investigations,” Willoughby said.
