BARBADOS HAS MADE some pleas for urgent international action by the United Nations on several fronts.
And high on the list was a plea for a global climate change pact that would help reduce the tragedies caused by powerful storms and hurricanes. Next was a call on the UN to address the way international financial institutions graduate small countries, like Barbados, from concessionary loans and grants.
Just as important, the country appealed to the world community to help stem the tides of small arms and ammunition now flooding developing countries, including those in the Caribbean.
They were three of the several key issues Freundel Stuart, Barbados’ Prime Minister, placed on the UN agenda for consideration when he delivered his country’s annual foreign policy statement.
