TAXI drivers are seeing red over a new system that was introduced to regulate their operations at the Bridgetown Port on Wednesday, but port officials have said the two taxi associations gave the new arrangement the green light.
Several operators told the WEEKEND NATION the order was given by the port for members of both Bridgetown Co-op Taxi and the Independent Seaport Union to use a one line system instead of two lines, which according to drivers, saw fewer taxis getting into the port.
They said on Wednesday the order came from the port’s manager of security Anthony Benn.
Co-op driver Horace Bayley, a 32-year taxi veteran, said he feared that this new rule would retard their business. He said about 225 taxis serviced the port daily and the two-lane system saw at least 50 taxis assembled in the port at one time.
