President of the Barbados Bar Association Liesel Weekes is calling for a criminal registry as a matter of urgency.
It came in the wake of Winston Adolphus Agard, 50, being on remand for 10 years, waiting to plead guilty to petty theft.
Weekes said had a criminal registry system been in place “such injustice would never have taken place”.
“It is an injustice for a man to be sitting in prison wanting to plead guilty and not getting the opportunity. Had he done so, he probably would have a much shorter sentence. You can’t give him his life back. So we need to establish a criminal registry and we need to do it with urgency so we don’t have to deal with those embarrassing situations and breaches of rights to a fair trial in a reasonable time,” she stressed.
