Countdown with DJ D.Luxe

Entrepreneur, mother of three, DJ extraordinaire.

Those are the best words to describe Dionna Goodman, also known as DJ D.Luxe. The young in-house DJ at a West Coast restaurant recently sat down with EASY and answered these ten questions:

10 Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, how did you happen to be living in this part of the world?

“My husband got me here. I used to think I couldn’t live on an island, but we lived in Fort Lauderdale in Miami for a while and after watching House Hunters International I figured if the people there can do it, we can. It’s been six years now.”

9 How did you come to be part of the arts?

“I’ve always been involved in the arts since childhood. My major is in television and radio broadcasting and I’ve danced every type of dance you can think of. I also grew up surrounded by music. My house was never quiet, so I developed an appreciation for everything artsy.”

8 There are not very many female DJs in the industry, how did you come to be a part of it?

“Over the past 10 years I would stay up putting together mixed tapes. I met DJ Hurricane who had some mini CD decks and I told her ‘I’d love to figure out how these things work’. I went and she showed me how everything works. This was like a five-minute lesson. After that she walked out the room and said, ‘You got this’.

7 How did you come up with your name?

“D is from my name Dionna – nobody says it right – and Luxe is because I love luxury and high-end stuff, fashion and dope music that would suit high-end fashion.”

6 Someone whispered to me that you are the owner of iexchange, how does that work into you?

“I am vice president of the company. We sell and buy stuff and I help with decorating but that’s about it… I mean its work.”

5 You’ve been named as a judge on this year’s instalment of Honey Jam, what has that been like?

“I am one of Honey Jam’s official judges and their official DJ. I get to live the best of both worlds. The programme is really cool because we have so much amazing talent on the island that goes unseen.”

4 What is one unique thing about DJ D.Luxe?

“I stand for two hours and DJ in heels.”

3 Being a mother, what has that been like for you?

“Being a mother has been amazing. I have three kids with three different personalities. I swear I have United Colours of Beneton kids, who are amazing little creatures. They’re approaching young adult teenagerdom. It’s important to show them what a woman and a lady is supposed to be like, especially my son, and not get the idea from social media with all their ‘rachetness’ cuz it ain’t cute.”

2 How do you strike the balance between work, marriage and the kids?

“Not thinking about it too hard. Have a sense of humour and understand that life is unexpected half the time, so make time for the important things. Don’t stress about the little things and appreciate people for who they are, flaws and all, and roll with it because we’re not perfect and we’re not promised tomorrow.”

1 What advice would you offer to any female wanting to enter your field?

“Do it because you love music. Anything you do in life make sure you do it because you can really do it all day for free. That’s when you know you’ve found your niche.  You don’t wanna be up there not lovin what you do; it shows. And keep some clothes on.”
