Rameses Brown says he has had enough. For a while yesterday, the entertainer had made up his mind that he was done with Crop Over after this year. However, he had a change of heart.
Yesterday afternoon, Brown made and shared a heartfelt video on social media saying he was finished with Crop Over after this season because of constant ridicule and taunting which eventually began to affect his 17-year-old daughter, who lives overseas, and 11-year-old son here.
Over the years, the 43-year-old, who usually enters the Sweet Soca and Party Monarch competitions, has been the subject of many a joke, memes and criticism for his yearly contributions to the festival.
Some of his more popular songs include All Circuits Are Busy and Blows.
“I really feel like I done, done. That’s just the way I felt at the time. It was honest and coming from the heart. In my head, I was just done with it and I’m just leaving everything in God’s hands. My main focus are my kids,” he said, addressing the video that went viral.
“My daughter is a bit soft and the slightest thing bothers her. It’s not about me because my back is broad, but I don’t want anything bothering her. I just want her to concentrate at school. I just don’t like it for my children, but nothing don’t bother me so,” he explained.
He told THE NATION he tried to stay away from the negativity and focus on positive vibes. However, he said leading up to posting the video, things just got “way too heavy”.
After an outpouring of love from family members, people in Barbados and strong encouragement from colleagues in the entertainment fraternity, Brown said he had to rethink his decision.
“My phone has been blowing up all day since I posted the video. It has not stopped ringing. I even stopped answering it after a while . . . . Dave Smooth [a DJ] called me and spoke to me and I want to say many thanks to him. Water Street Boys [songwriters] also called me and spoke to me as well. So, I’m thankful to them,” he said.
He said comments online also touched him after someone encouraged him to view them.
“A lot of people on social media were being positive about me and encouraging me to keep at it and not give up. One lady even said she had tears in her eyes. That touched me. It showed me that this is bigger than me . . . . The comments really touched me. Thanks to everyone for the love,” he added. (DB)
