PORT-OF-SPAIN – The four-year-old who braved a 300-foot precipice to seek crucial help for his mother and aunt after their car ran off the North Coast Road to Maracas last week Tuesday may well be climbing into history as the youngest ever person to receive a national award when this country celebrates independence next week.
Well-placed sources have indicated that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has jurisdiction in adding her choice to the recommendations of the Awards Committee headed by the Chief Justice for bestowing national awards, is considering hailing the heroics of little Kal-el Joel Alleyne of Santa Cruz with the award for gallantry.
On being told about the possibilities, Kal-el’s grandmother Stephanie Graham told Newsday Monday, “I believe that he is supposed to get an award for that great act which he did for saving his mother and aunt, and I know it was an act of God.
“God led him up that precipice and God was in control of that whole situation, God is still in the miracle working business.”
Graham remained unceasing with her hugs yesterday for Kal-el who is spending time at her Santa Cruz home. Graham, a pastor at His Majesty New Creations Ministry, said she would not be surprised if her grandson were given the gallantry award.
Sources revealed that the Prime Minister, after reading about Kal-el’s act of tackling the difficult terrain to climb out of the precipice to get help for his mother and aunt trapped and injured down below, is contemplating awarding him at the ceremonies to be held on Monday on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of independence.
