Tropical Storm Erika moving quickly toward the west

A DAY AFTER Danny degenerated into a low pressure trough, residents of the Leeward Islands are bracing for another weather system.

The centre of Tropical Storm Erika is expected to approach that region from Wednesday night into early Thursday.

At 8 a.m. the storm’s maximum sustained winds were near 45 mph (75 kph) with higher gusts.

Erika is centred about 750 miles (1 205 kilometres) east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west at near 20 mph (31 kph).

Tropical storm watches have been issued for Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Interests elsewhere in the Leeward Islands have been urged to monitor the progress of Erika, as watches may be required for additional areas later today. (NB)
