Hurricane Danny continues to weaken

TROPICAL STORM WATCHES will likely be in effect for portions of the Leeward Islands and Virgin Islands later today as Hurricane Danny weakens.

At 5 a.m. the centre of the system was located near latitude 15.2 degrees north, longitude 50.8 degrees west, or about 741 miles east of the Leeward Islands.

Danny is moving toward the west-northwest near ten miles per hour (17 kilometres per hour).

The National Hurricane Center says a turn to the west with an increase in forward speed is expected later today.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts.  Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Danny is expected to become a tropical storm on Sunday as it approaches the Leeward Islands.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the centre and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km). (NB)
