SEPTEMBER 8 IS the date set for the preliminary inquiry involving police constable Everton Randolph Gittens to begin in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court.
Accused of murdering Selwyn Knight; recklessly engaging in conduct that put Junior Knight in danger of death or serious bodily harm and wounding Junior Knight with intent to maim, disfigure or disable all occurring on March 15 this year, the Dash Gap, St Michael man did not appear in Court today where the matter had been down to be heard.
In the afternoon, Prosecutor Inspector Eustace Ifill told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant presiding in Criminal Court No 2, that counsel for Gittens contacted him earlier and indicated they would be at the Supreme Court to further a bail hearing after which the Magistrate’s Court would have been informed.
He also noted that he was ready to begin as disclosure had been provided on July 17 at the pre-hearing and “were it not for counsel” the matter would have started. He sought and obtained an adjournment for next month.
On a previous occasion, Gittens’ attorneys Angella Mitchell-Gittens and Desmond Sands applied for bail for the indictable offences but it was denied by Justice Olson Alleyne.
One of Gittens’attorneys Angella Mitchell-Gittens told this newspaper that the duty judge at the Supreme Court had adjourned the matter pending a date to hear the bail application.
The accused man remains remanded at HMP Dodds. (GBM)
