Teachers want school cleaned

That’s what teachers at Elliott Belgrave Primary School want.
Located in Gays, St Peter, the former Boscobel Primary is the latest in a long list of schools dealing with environmental issues.

Nine of the 12 teachers did not show up for work yesterday and some parents opted to take their children back home early in the day.
Around 1:30 p.m. parents were contacted by principal Norma Worrell to collect their children.

Sources said the environmental issues have been ongoing for a while and the discovery of what appeared to be mouldy cupboards in the nutrition room that eventually dropped off, was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

A source said teachers had been complaining about the unsanitary conditions for over three years, but little to nothing had been done.

“The school has mould in many places. They have said to us the mould is not something that would make you sick unless you are already sick. A school is not a place that you should have any type of fungus no matter what it is. We have mushrooms growing out of walls on the wooden building. In the prefab building, the wood has rottened out until there are holes in the building. It’s just terrible.”

The source said something must be done before the teachers returned.
“It’s a case where teachers were talking about it for a long time. They aren’t being unreasonable. We reported it for a long time, so they aren’t just jumping up and not giving the ministry the chance to address it.

They can’t suffer forever, so they decided they had to make a stand. Clean the school or at the very least listen to our grievances. There’s been enough time for the problems to be dealt with. You have to stand up for something,”

Prime Minister Mia Mottley has said some schools will receive major sprucing up over the summer vacation. (DB)
