FORMER CHAIRMAN of the National Sports Council (NSC), Seibert Straughn, says the time has come for a “serious look” to be taken at which sports should be represented at international meets such as the Commonwealth and Pan Am Games.
Straughn, who was chairman of the NSC from 2010-2013, told the NATION that he was disappointed at the performances of some of the sporting disciplines that represented Barbados at the just concluded Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada.
“It is not about showing up. If you can’t come up to scratch at the Central American And Caribbean (CAC) Games, why should you be allowed to compete at the Pan Am Games which is a much higher level?
“Track and field stood tall, but it has to be said that some of the other sports were lucky to have been sent to Canada …” (MK)
