Water activities added to Bridgetown Market

BRIDGETOWN MARKET 2015 hosted in association with Flow will be even more vibrant and exciting, says producer Annette Nias.

During a briefing at the National Cultural Foundation’s West Terrace, St James office, Nias said one of the highlights of the event, which runs from Friday July 31 to Monday August third, will be a new water festival.

In addition to the traditional elements such as the craft village, tuk band, drumming and dance ensembles, Emancipation Day ceremony and the crowning of the King and Queen of the Crop, patrons will be introduced to a host of beach and water activities. These include kayaking, boogie boarding, trips on a glass bottom boat, snorkeling, safaris, martial arts demonstrations and talks about marine life.

“We are trying to do something really vibrant. . . . The festival is being sponsored and will take place at Weiser’s Bar and Restaurant. The thinking is that Bridgetown Market is really bordered on one side by water, why are we afraid of the water? So we got all the necessary permission and we are inviting Barbadians to come down in the correct gear for water, enjoy the activities at Weisers’ Water fest and then take in the market afterwards or at the same time,” she said.

Children will not be left out either as a special circus act, sponsored by telecommunications company Flow called Clowns on Flow, will be introduced. The ten-minute show will be held on the Saturday and Sunday.

Co-producer Keith Squires added that he expected a good festival as a lot of interest has been expressed about it, particularly by stall owners. Though he could not give a final number, he estimated those at present were on par with last year’s numbers and he expected them to rise.

“We had a lot of meetings and we outlined the concept this year trying to improve things. All like now the spaces are being sold so things will change between now and we have two weeks left . . . constituents seem happy,” he added. (SDB Media)
