Lewis has high hopes for Burke

TRACK AND FIELD legend Carl Lewis is expecting big things of Barbados’ number one junior sprinter Mario Burke this fall.

Double CARIFTA gold medalist Burke and CARIFTA silver medalist Tristan Evelyn will be joining the University of Houston’s track and field team and King Carl told NATION SPORTS that he is excited about their prospects in Texas.

Lewis is now a coach at UH, his alma mater, and he was excited to finally see them in action. But it was Burke – the number five ranked junior sprinter in the world – that he really has high hopes for.

The nine-time Olympic gold medalist was today at the National Stadium conducting a sprint and jumps clinic. The clinic was facilitated by the Springer Memorial School and Burke and Evelyn were two of the participants. Burke’s 10.21 seconds in the 100 metres puts him as fifth in the world among juniors.

About 20 athletes participated in the clinic including the likes of National long jump record holder Shamar Rock, Ashanna Hodge and Akayla Morris. Lewis noted that they were really great and he hopes they were inspired to go further in the sport. (PG)
