THE FUN PART of the Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch contest is over and the fight is on.
After the lyrics were tested on members of the public at tents on June 13 and 21 at The Lester Vaughan School, it is time for judgement.
Twelve contestants in both the eight to 12 and 13 to 18 categories will be coming back to Lester Vaughan for tonight’s semi-finals with their game faces on in the hopes of landing one of the eight coveted places in both finals to take the two crowns away from Raanan in the younger category and Sammy G amongst the seniors.
Some of the singers shone brightly at the tents and, quite justifiably, might be thinking that a place in the July 18 finals is theirs.
Browne Star (Free Education), J’Tanya (Doctor Doctor), A@lee-aah (Child in Yuh Mind), Dynamo (Drinkers Anthem) and Star Diamond (Not In Front Of Me) were among those in the eight to 12 category who got good responses at the tents, while Ah-Dee-Lah (Remember Me) and Raheem (Don’t Shoot Me) appear to be out front in terms of popularity with the audiences in the older juniors.
RJ should be in there as well as Sparkle T. Not to be discounted is Nubian Queen, who has shown that even though she may not be among the favourites, she is capable of delivering in such a way that she is hard to ignore. Showtime is 7 p.m.
Following are the lists of semi-finalists in both categories:
