PARENTS OF CHILDREN suffering with Type 1 diabetes are appealing for people dealing with schoolchilldren to become better educated about the condition in order to support diabetic students who may have a crisis during the school day.
Kim Trotman, the mother of a 13-year-old diabetic son, went further, suggesting there should be legislation to empower teachers to assist young diabetics in their care when those children were in trouble.
Trotman said that in some instances when diabetic children had an emergency at school, teachers were unable to help because of ignorance of the condition or because of restrictions on their involvement in giving certain health assistance to children at school.
