Record CCCAN medal haul for Barbados

BARBADOS TOOK FULL ADVANTAGE of being at home to come away with their best ever performances at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Championships over the past week.

The pool component of the championships was completed at the Aquatic Centre on Saturday and the Bajans ended with a whopping 53 medals. Barbados won 19 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze medals, a vast improvement over the 29 medals they won in 2013.

Standing at the top of the medal standings was Trinidad and Tobago with 26 gold, 13 silver and 2 bronze while Puerto Rico won 15 gold, 20 silver and 16 bronze medals.

Barbados also finished third in the points standing with 574 points, also an improvement over 2013 where they finished seventh. Puerto Rico ended on top with 878.33 points and Costa Rica third with 768 points.

The Open Water Swimming began yesterday with the 10K race in Carlisle Bay while the 5K race will be staged tomorrow from 8 a.m. at the same location. (PG)
