GOVERNMENT’S enforcement of tax clearances before a person can send money out of Barbados has cast a net wide enough to disappoint a nonagenarian trying to send a small sum to relatives in the United Kingdom.
What’s worse, according to Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley, was that the 91-year-old woman had not worked here in the last 50 years.
She was responding to a determination by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler announced in Monday’s 2015-2016 Budget, that effective immediately, all professional operators provided for under the registration regime of the Profession, Trade and Business Registration Act, “shall be required to produce a valid tax clearance certificate from the [Barbados Revenue Authority] in order to renew their respective licences to practice in | this jurisdiction”.
