Injury won’t stop Burke’s Olympic dream

Josh Burke is set on competing at next year’s Olympic Games when surfing will make its debut.

However, Burke experienced a major hiccup when he injured an ankle a few months ago.

“I got hurt at home just free surfing and having fun. I tore a tendon in my ankle and I couldn’t do anything for four months,” he said.

“After the first month, you were fine because you just had to focus on getting better, but as time goes on, you just want to surf and just do certain things that you can’t do. I couldn’t even do certain workouts. I had to stick to upper body exercises. So I gained ten pounds and was out of shape and it was really hard on my mental health – you have to just pull yourself out of it and think positively.”

Burke was speaking to the Saturday Sun following his second-place finish in the National Surfing Championships last week at the Soup Bowl, Bathsheba.
