BARBADIANS have received a quiet reminder of the high incidence of glaucoma in the country and the need for early eye tests to detect the disease.
The reminder came on Friday from head of the Ophthalmology Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Dr Trevor Drakes after Shell Western Supply & Trading Limited’s product trader Deronne Kirton had handed over a $10 000 tonometer to the department on behalf of his company to be used for checking pressure of the eyes of patients.
Drakes pointed out that the Barbados Eye Study had highlighted the high prevalence of glaucoma in the society, with seven per cent of the population over age 40 diagnosed with the disease. (TY)
