SOCIAL SCENE: Guests of honour

IT WAS A CELEBRATION to honour the memory of the late Lord Robert Gavron, who for over 20 years contributed to the development of West Indies cricket. Some of the 22 young Barbadian who benefited from scholarships to hone their craft in the United Kingdom were among the guests in the President’s Box at Kensington Oval, where Lord Gavron’s widow, Lady Kate Gavron, was the guest of honour.

She told the guests about her husband’s “immense joy” at witnessing the success of his scholarship winners, and regretted he was no longer here to see the four Barbadians – Kemar Roach, Kraigg Brathwaite, Jason Holder and Shai Hope – play England in the just ended series.

“I think Bob’s petals would open the minute he arrived at Grantley Adams [International] Airport. He loved being here . . . perhaps above all when he was here in the President’s Suite in the presence of some of his heroes, watching a game of cricket,” Lady Gavron remarked.
