JUST OVER 1 000 volunteers answered the call between April 28 and May 3 to participate in a cleanup effort to rid Barbados’ beaches of sargassum seaweed.
In a statement issued to thank volunteers and corporate Barbados for their assistance, special projects officer at the National Conservation Commission (NCC), Ricardo Marshall, said 1 104 volunteers representing various organisations, groups and individuals turned up for the national effort.
However, Marshall reminded residents that the cleaning of beaches was continuous and necessary to keep the seaweed under control.
“As such, any organisation or groups desirous of assisting on weekends are asked to contact the National Conservation Commission to arrange for the provision of supplies and equipment and the collection or removal of the seaweed,” he stated.
The Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Coast Guard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Optimist Club of Bridgetown, Sandals Resorts; church and school groups, including Brownies, Guiders and Blossoms; community groups, sports clubs and individuals were among those who took part in the national cleanup.
 Marshall also thanked corporate Barbados for its range of donations, which included gloves, face masks, bags, skips, bottled water, juice, tarpaulins, rakes and advertising space. Trucks, heavy equipment and skips used at beaches were also provided by Government and private enterprises. (BGIS)
