MAKE EDUCATION an essential service and block teachers from striking, says a magistrate.

Judicial officer Graveney Bannister is adamant that students would be better served if teachers were unable to stage industrial action but instead were obligated to go to binding arbitration or mediation with their disputes.

“My firm belief is that education should be made an essential service and that teachers should not be able, with the support of their unions, to go out and strike and disrupt the process like that, but they should sit down and have dialogue and the matter should be governed by binding mediation or arbitration. That’s my view,” Bannister told the DAILY NATION.
