OUTGOING PRINCIPAL of the University of the West Indies’ Barbados campus Sir Hilary Beckles today defended comments he had made about the impact of the decision to make Barbadian students pay more for their tuition.

He said it would be irresponsible of university leaders not to share with policymakers, such as governments, the consequences of policies so that they could adjust if they so desired.

Sir Hilary has been critical of the Barbados Government’s decision to make students contribute more to their tuition at the UWI in the tough economic times.

However, during a news conference today Sir Hilary said he was not going to be distracted by any comments from his mandate as new head of the regional university.  (TY)
