URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION (UDC) staff have taken to heart the international theme for Earth Day: It’s Our Turn To Lead, and led in the clean-up of the inner basin of the Careenage in Bridgetown yesterday.
UDC director Derek Alleyne said the major effort was to have ten staff use kayaks to traverse the Careenage.
“It is something that we feel very passionate about because our windows look out into the Careenage, and we see some examples of people not understanding the importance of proper waste disposal.
“We hope that when we go in and people see us doing it, they will stop when they raise their hands to throw away their garbage and find a bin,” Alleyne said.
The UDC team removed several bags of garbage that included plastic bottles, cups and Styrofoam containers. (LK)
