1

The Government of Barbados has issued a statement expressing concern over the escalating hostilities in the Middle East and outlining guidance for Barbadians in the affected region.

Below is the full statement:

The Government and people of Barbados are deeply concerned by the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East. Barbados is concerned that military action affecting a number of other countries in the region has the potential to undermine international peace and security.

We join the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres in condemning the military escalation in the Region and call on all Member States to respect their commitments under international law. Barbados joins the Gulf Cooperation Council Member States and other affected countries in the region in calling for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

We regret the loss of innocent lives in this emerging conflict. The Government and people of Barbados take this opportunity to express their deepest sympathy to the loved ones of those affected by these attacks and pray that peace and stability will return to the region quickly.

Consular Advice to all Barbadians visiting or residing in the affected areas

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados recommends that Barbadians delay any travel to the affected areas until conditions return to normal. Those currently in the region should stay alert and shelter in place.

Over 100,000 children to benefit from lifetime digital health records

Over 100,000 children in Guyana will now have their baseline health information permanently captured under the country’s expanding digital healthcare system.

This was announced by  President Mohamed Irfaan Ali as he spoke at the commissioning of the new Outpatient Pavilion at Dr Balwant Singh’s Hospital on Saturday.

The  president also outlined a series of reforms aimed at modernising and future-proofing the national health sector.

Ali said the integration of electronic health records, alongside expanded screening initiatives, has already resulted in tens of thousands of children having their baseline medical data securely stored. The system, he explained, is designed to track patients’ health throughout their lives.

“More than 100,000 children will now grow up in an environment where their baseline health data has already been captured and recorded to track them for the rest of their lives,” the president said. “That is a new future our children will grow up in. That is the new norm.”

He noted that early capture of health indicators will enable improved monitoring, faster diagnoses and more effective long-term treatment planning as children transition into adolescence and adulthood.

The initiative forms part of the government’s nationwide rollout of electronic health records and digital health platforms aimed at reducing waiting times, eliminating inefficiencies and strengthening preventative care.

“We are building a healthcare system in which waiting times are reduced, shortages are eliminated and early detection becomes standard practice,” Ali said.

By establishing comprehensive patient records early, Guyana is shifting from a reactive to a proactive healthcare model, he added.

“These are the things that will make the difference long after all of us are gone,” the head of state said. “That is how we take Guyana safely, better and healthier into the future.” (CMC)

Fire officials were on the scene of a fire early this morning at the Salvation Army’s thrift store on Mason Hall Street, The City.

Divisional Officer in charge of the Central Division for the Barbados Fire Service, Tremelle Perch, said crews received a call at 5:28 a.m. reporting a house fire in the area.

“We responded from the Port Fire Station and Bridgetown Fire Station with two water tenders and one tanker,” Perch explained. “When we got here, the one structure was engulfed in flame.”

He said firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread further.

“We managed to confine the fire to one structure. I want to commend the work of the fire officers once again for limiting it to the damage that it had,” he said.

There were reports that flames may have affected a nearby property, but Perch indicated that a formal investigation would determine the full circumstances.

He noted that the major damage was to the ceiling of the Salvation Army building, but added that the structure was still intact, for the most part.

Major Robert Pyle, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army Barbados Division, said he was alerted to the fire shortly after it began. and

On arrival, he observed emergency personnel on site and damage to the building. “The roof was partly on fire and inside the building, the ceiling had collapsed and we had extensive damage inside of the thrift store,” he said, noting that clothing and other items were destroyed by fire and water.

Pyle said some doors had to be forced open during firefighting efforts, adding to the damage. He indicated that a full assessment has not yet been completed as fire officers were still on location.

While the Salvation Army does not operate its thrift store on Sundays, Pyle confirmed that it would not open tomorrow.

“For Monday, the thrift store will not be open, but we have to assess the damage and what we can do,” he said, pointing out that the collapsed ceiling represents major structural damage.
