Parkinson Memorial celebrates 65 years

0

For 65 years, Parkinson Memorial School has had one simple goal: to take every child who walks through the door and show them that they can be great.

The school proudly bears the name of Rawle Parkinson, a man known as the “Grandfather of Education” in Barbados. He was a visionary who believed in teaching students real-world skills.

Over the years, the school’s value has at times been underestimated. But the students it has produced are the best proof of its success. We see it in leading educators like D. David Browne, and in Captain Tevin Maynard, who went from the Pine to the State House to serve the President. We see it in Kelly-Ann Blackman, who used her “Parkinson grit” to become a top attorney. And, of course, we see it in legends like Malcolm Marshall and Edwin Yearwood, who took their island talent to the world stage.

Minister of Educational Transformation Chad Blackman has described Parkinson as “a shining example of what occurs when discipline, opportunity and belief combine.”

Both past and present students say the secret to the school’s success is the dedicated staff – from the secretaries and ancillary workers who keep things running smoothly to the teachers who stay late to help a student find their confidence.

According to Principal Captain Adrian Ward, whether you are into mathematics, hairdressing, singing, or science, there is a space for all students to grow at Parkinson.

In its 65th year, the school is looking forward to exciting changes, like the brand-new Creative Arts block currently under construction. Principal Ward says the school, anchored by its motto, Onward and Upward, will keep moving and growing for years to come to ensure every student can achieve greatness.

Legislation on ‘crossing the floor’ brought to Parliament

1

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley this morning introduced the country’s first anti-defection legislation.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, is geared is at providing a specific framework which governs sitting Members of Parliament who cross the floor of the House of Assembly. They would have to face the electorate once more via a by-election, for a new mandate from the people.

“We have before us a very simple Bill, but one that is fundamental for the stability of our democracy. The amendment which is before us is about mandate integrity,” Mottley said.

She revealed the amendment applied only to a Member of Parliament who was elected as a candidate of a political party and who then later either resigned from that party, was expelled by that party, or formally crossed the floor to another political alignment.

“It is fundamentally about protecting the voter’s choice. It does not deal with how a member votes. It does not deal with the fact that members may sometimes dissent from their political parties. It does not silence criticism of either the party or the Cabinet in any manner or form. It addresses only, Sir, a formal change in political allegiance after an election,” Mottley made clear during the second reading of the bill in the Lower House.

It was the second session of public business since the Barbados Labour Party’s emphatic 30-0 win at the polls on February 11.

Under the amended legislation, upon any sitting Member of Parliament crossing the floor, the Speaker will then make a declaration at the next sitting of the House if the declaration is resignation or expulsion, and there is a defined period of 14 days to challenge that allegation in a court of law before any vacancy takes place.

“So there are checks and balances embedded in the amendment,” The Prime Minister said.

According to Mottley, Barbados is not breaking new ground by introducing the legislation, as it is prevalent in in over 40 countries across the entire world, many of whom are Commonwealth countries.

“At its core, Sir, it basically says that if the political alignment under which you were elected changes fundamentally, the democratic response is to return that question to the electorate, go back to the voter.”

Former Bahamian cop to appeal 30 year jail sentence

0

NASSAU – A former police officer , who  had served on the Royal Bahamas Police Force with distinction, has indicated he will appeal against a 30 year jail sentence after he was found guilty of plotting the murder of his alleged romantic rival.

Justice Renae McKay imposed the sentence on Darren Davis, 49,  a former police corporal during the sentencing phase of  his murder conspiracy trial.

The court was told that a conspirator faces the same penalty as the person who commits the underlying offense and prior to his conviction in June 2025.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Terry Archer, had sought a sentence of 40 years while Davis’ attorney, Davis Cash had argued that 30 years in prison was appropriate.

Prosecutors convinced six of nine jurors that Davis conspired with others to murder Jayson Whitfield, 43, a senior clerk at the Passport Office, who was found shot to death inside his government-assigned car outside his home on December 3, 2022.

Prosecutors relied on circumstantial evidence to prove their case, alleging that both men were seeing the same woman and that Davis allegedly told her he was going to kill Whitfield.

Police allegedly found photos of Whitfield, his car, and a pinned location of his address in the trash folder of Davis’ phone. (CMC)

Berger closes Barbados operations

Berger Paints has closed its operations in Barbados.

Reports reaching The Nation indicated the plant at Exmouth Gap, Brandons, St Michael was closed and staff were sent home this morning.

When the team arrived, the place was closed and a security guard directed them to contact a representative.

Berger Paints is a subsidiary of the Ansa McAl Group in Trinidad and Tobago and it published a statement on its website, indicating it was operating under a new model and the plant in Barbados would close on April 24.

The products would still be manufactured in the Caribbean and distributed here through selected partners.

“As part of this transition, Berger Paints Barbados Limited will begin a wind-down of its manufacturing and site operations, with all sites closing on April 24th, 2026. This includes the plant, warehouse, Colour Shops, and administrative offices. This action has become necessary due to sustained changes in the operating environment, including the impact of Article 164, which has affected the long-term viability of local manufacturing operations for Berger Paints Barbados.”

The statement said it recognised the closure would impact staff and their families and the company was committed to “handling this process in a way that is fair, respectful, and centred on its people”.

Consultation will begin next week. (Nation News)

‘Start financial literacy early’

0

Financial literacy, including capital market awareness, must start early in the schools.

That is the advice from Barbados Stock Exchange (BSE) managing director Marlon Yarde, who also said that regional cooperation is now essential as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes economies and financial systems become more complex.

He was speaking at the Ministry of Educational Transformation during the recent prize-giving ceremony of the 2025 WizdomCRM Virtual Stock Market Game, where Barbadian students emerged on top.

The competition was won by Loki Clarke, followed by Noah Clarke, Theon Birkett, Sarrayah Yearwood and Ajani Webster Worrell. It was a first time a Barbadian was the victor.

“We are living in an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping economies, where financial systems are becoming increasingly complex, and where regional collaboration is no longer optional – it is essential,” Yarde said.

“Financial literacy today goes far beyond saving and spending. It is about understanding markets, risk, data, technology, and opportunity. It is about equipping young people not merely to participate in the economy, but to lead and transform it.

“This is why the WizdomCRM Virtual Stock Market AI Game is so powerful. It places financial education directly in the classroom, across borders, using generative AI and gamification to create real-world learning experiences.”

The BSE boss noted that students were “analysing markets, making decisions, and learning the consequences of those decisions in real time, thereby developing their critical thinking skills, a skill that is required in any professional endeavour”.

“For the Barbados Stock Exchange, this initiative reflects a long-standing commitment to education and market development. We believe that capital-market awareness must start early, because tomorrow’s investors, issuers, entrepreneurs, and regulators are sitting in today’s classrooms,” he said.

Yarde said that Barbados “proudly celebrates winning the Caribbean Title Trophy in AI-driven financial literacy – a first for our country, and an achievement of which we can all be immensely proud”.

“Today, we also celebrate our outstanding prize winners – Loki Clarke, Noah Clarke, and Theon Birkett – along with all the students and schools that participated. You are not just winners of a game; you are pioneers, demonstrating what is possible when talent meets opportunity,” he said.

“Our theme this year, Connected For Impact: Empowering CARICOM Through AI, Financial Literacy, And Regional Collaboration, could not be more relevant.”

He said this was why initiatives such as the BSE’s Innovation and Growth Market 200 matter, because the generation we are celebrating today will be the very generation to raise capital, grow enterprises, and compete regionally and globally tomorrow.

“Perhaps most exciting of all is the regional dimension of this programme. This initiative represents the early foundation of a virtual, regional stock-market learning ecosystem, powered by AI and shared across CARICOM,” Yarde said.

“It demonstrates what is possible when exchanges, educators, technology providers, and policymakers work together around a shared vision. A vision of connected, financially-literate Caribbean youth, equipped not only with knowledge, but with confidence, curiosity, and regional awareness.”

Competition winner Loki Clarke urged other students to participate in the stock market game.

While not divulging full details from his winning strategy, Clarke, a student of Queen’s College, said he concentrated mainly on the Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago capital markets, noting that “there is a lot of money to be made”.

“My main strategy would be basically buying and selling Trinidad and Jamaican stocks basically daily,” he said.

“I think the game has really helped me with its AI platform in developing my skills and also financial literacy and because of this my career path has been completely altered. Since I started the game, it’s really shown me different career options which I can take.”

Paradise lose, but remain on top

by Morissa Lindsay

Leaders Paradise Football Club suffered a 3-2 loss to Brittons Hill on Sunday in the Barbados Football Association’s (BFA) Premier League at the BFA Technical Centre in Wildey.

As the battle among the top five contenders in the standings continued to unfold, Paradise breathed a sigh of relief when the nightcap of the tripleheader between defending champions Weymouth Wales and Kickstart Rush Stars ended in a goalless stalemate.

Kickstart entered the match on 14 points, just three shy of overtaking Paradise at the top on 16. However, a draw against Wales did not help their case much.

Therefore, it means Paradise have a one-point lead on 16, Kickstart have 15, Brittons Hill are now jointly tied on 13 points with Ellerton FC, Wales are fourth on 12, and University of the West Indies Blackbirds have moved into sixth position on nine points following their 1-0 victory over Bagtelle in the opening match.

Festival ends on a high

Under neon lights and a white tent, a crowd gathered at the Holetown Public Centre on Sunday night for Rhythms Of Pride.

The concert featured the Police Combo band, which delivered both upbeat and soothing instrumentals to patrons as it brought the curtain down on the Holetown Festival that began on February 15 and treated locals and visitors alike to a wide variety of attractions and entertainment.

Barbadians, along with visitors from Canada, Chicago and Germany, could be seen soaking up the entertainment provided by the island’s top performers.

Adrian Clarke took the crowd back in time with his nostalgic performances of Lunar 7’s spouge classic Marry Me and Another Try along with Soca You, We Having A Nice Time and Stiff.

Soca artiste Hypasounds closed the show with a bang, performing his classics So Good, Barbados Nice, Happy, Dip and Sugar Rush which saw patrons in an energised line dancing session.

Gill Casten, a visitor from Chicago, said she originally came to the island for a friend’s 40th birthday and received word of the festival and decided to show up and see what it was like.

Throughout the night she enjoyed the music, dancing and vibing with her friends.

“We love it, it’s fun and it’s everything we were looking for when we came to Barbados,” she said excitedly.

Another attendee, Allison Payne, said whenever soca was played she always had a good time because it was her love and joy. She said she had attended the Saturday night show and thoroughly enjoyed it when her favourite performers Lil Rick and Edwin Yearwood took to the stage.

“I love soca. I love the Bajan artistes. I love Bajan music and it’s been good. I think it’s an opportunity because I think soca music is undervalued and underrated in Barbados and throughout the world. I also think it was really good for the tourists to see part of our culture and see them enjoying themselves brought me joy as well,” Payne said

Former UK ambassador Mandelson released

0

LONDON – Former British ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson was released from police custody on Tuesday after being arrested in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following revelations over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson, 72, was fired from the most prestigious posting in Britain’s diplomatic service in September, when the depth of his friendship with the convicted sex offender started to become clear.

Police earlier this month began a criminal investigation into Mandelson after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government passed on communications between the former ambassador and Epstein.

“Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement relating to an investigation into a former government minister.

Mandelson was filmed leaving his central London home on Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by plainclothes officers wearing body cameras, before being driven away in a car.

A separate statement later said he had been released on bail, pending further investigation, and he was seen returning home at around 0200 GMT.

The arrest means police suspect a crime has been committed but does not imply any guilt.

There was no immediate response from Mandelson’s lawyers. (Reuters)
