Central Bank Governor says Barbados economy in “excellent” position at start of 2026

0

Barbados’ economy has entered 2026 in an “excellent” position, with 20 consecutive quarters of growth, low inflation, falling debt and strong foreign reserves, according to Central Bank Governor Dr The Most Honourable Kevin Greenidge.

Presenting the Bank’s January to March review today, Greenidge said the economy expanded by 1.7 per cent in the first quarter, while inflation stood at 1.1 per cent and unemployment at 7.2 per cent.

Asked how the country was performing, he replied: “I’d say we’re excellent.”

He also revealed Barbados intended to maintain close ties to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a safeguard against global shocks.

“When we exit the programme, the Prime Minister had indicated that we would keep the IMF on speed dial, close, almost like an insurance policy,” Greenidge said.

Tourism remained the main driver of growth, with stay-over arrivals rising 1.1 per cent to more than 237 000 visitors, while cruise arrivals surged 30 per cent.

Greenidge said stay-over visitors remained far more valuable economically.

“Long stay gives you about nine times what you get from cruise,” he said.

Construction rose 3.5 per cent, while agriculture grew 4.1 per cent, helped by a sharp rebound in fishing. Fish catches jumped 55.2 per cent after disruption caused by Hurricane Beryl last year.

Government’s finances also improved, with a primary surplus of $647.3 million and debt falling to 94.6 per cent of GDP.

International reserves remained around $3 billion, equivalent to 25.5 weeks of import cover.

The Central Bank expects Barbados’ economy to grow between 2 and 3 per cent this year, though Greenidge warned that oil prices, geopolitical tensions and climate shocks remained risks. (CLM)

Portvale Sugar Factory resumes operations after mechanical repairs

0

The Portvale Sugar Factory has resumed grinding operations following a brief shutdown caused by a mechanical fault.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the Barbados Energy and Sugar Company (BESCO), which said the interruption occurred after a mill malfunction, prompting immediate work by its engineering team.

Engineers reportedly worked around the clock to complete repairs and restore the facility to full operational capacity.

BESCO said sugar production for the 2026 crop has been progressing well despite the temporary disruption.

The company thanked staff, partners and the wider community for their support and said it remains focused on the successful completion of the current production campaign.

Govt warns against illegal construction in Six Men’s

0

The Ministry of Housing and Lands has completed surveying on the first section of land at Six Men’s, St Peter, as Government accelerates efforts to empower squatters with title deeds.

It has erected a billboard warning against the construction of any new structures in the area, which is considered one of the largest squatter settlements in the country.

Ian Gill, general manager of the National Housing Corporation (NHC), confirmed that the billboard was installed to preserve the integrity of the area. The notice states: “By order of the National Housing Corporation, there shall be no erection of any structures (houses or ancillary buildings) on lands owned by the NHC at Six Men’s Tenantry, St Peter.” It further warns that the NHC will exercise its rights as the owner should the directive be ignored. Gill explained that the sign was a necessary step to facilitate the Six Men’s Life Improvement Project, a specialised Tenantry Freehold Purchase Act initiative. “The billboard indicates the area to which the notice relates,” he told the MIDWEEK NATION. “The sign simply stops persons from going to randomly set up new houses. The area is being surveyed with one section completed.”

This development follows a pledge made during the February General Election campaign by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and St Peter parliamentary representative Colin Jordan. At that time, they announced that more than 100 families in Six Men’s would finally receive title deeds, correcting what Mottley described as a “historic land injustice”.

132 tenants

Jordan previously noted that 132 tenants had qualified for the programme. By February, 37 householders had received letters of

offer, with surveys under way to facilitate the transfer of titles.

While the Government moves ahead with the transfer process, sources indicated that a financial settlement regarding the land’s ownership remained unresolved. The land was originally owned by the Broomes family, who have been embroiled in a legal battle with the State for decades.

According to official sources, a high-level team comprising officials from the Solicitor General’s Office, Ministry of Housing and the Planning & Development Department has held meetings with the family over the past two years. However, negotiations have stalled.

“We were unable to reach a financial settlement as the family rejected all of the offers put on the table,” one official revealed.

It is understood that Government offered a payout of $8 million, but the Broomes family is demanding significantly more.

NNP gets new leader

0

Carolyn Clarke will take over as political leader of the New National Party (NNP) after Kemar Stuart announced yesterday that his one-year tenure was up.

Clarke was the party’s candidate in the St Michael East constituency in the February 11 General Election.

Stuart, who unsuccessfully contested the St John riding, said the change was mandated by the party’s constitution.

“I wish to thank all those persons who supported and believed in the formation of NNP. I am grateful for all your love and to the people of St John and Barbados who acted to show a permanent mark of love by voting for me, the NNP and its candidates,” he said in a brief statement.

Saying it was “a great honour” to serve as the first political leader of the young party, he said he would not be seeking office for the 20262027 period.

“I wish to personally congratulate Carolyn Clarke . . . as she embarks on her new journey to political leadership,” Stuart added.

Barbados Pride have grabbed the third and final qualifying spot in this year’s West Indies Championship following their comprehensive victory over the Jamaica Scorpions on Tuesday.

Pride, last year’s runners-up, entered the third and final round of matches in fourth position on 19.8 points, 9.8 points behind the Scorpions on 29.6 points.

Table leaders Guyana Harpy Eagles (43.2 points) and second-placed Trinidad and Tobago Red Force (37 points) were battling for the top spot having already secured their spot in the next round.

However, with their emphatic innings and 11-run win over the Scorpions at Sabina Park inside three days, the Pride now occupy second position on 42.2 points, with the Scorpions finishing in fourth on 34 points.

The top spot will be determined at the conclusion of Wednesday’s final day, with both the Harpy Eagles and Red Force in positions to win their respective matches against the Windward Islands Volcanoes and Leeward Islands Hurricanes.

In this year’s new-look format, the top team will advance straight to the finals, with the second and third-placed teams battling it out in a Qualifier for a spot in the final, which is set for May 17 to 20 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. (CMC)
