42 killed in clashes between Pakistani and Afghan troops

0

KABUL/ISLAMABAD – Pakistani and Afghan troops clashed at multiple points along their expansive border on Tuesday as the United Nations ‌mission for Afghanistan warned that 42 civilians in the country had been killed so far in the six-day conflict.

The South Asian allies-turned-foes have engaged in their worst fighting in years following Pakistani air strikes on major Afghan cities last week, raising fears of another protracted conflict in a region also contending with US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Islamabad has launched air-to-ground missiles at Taliban military sites over the last week, and even directly targeted the Taliban government in unprecedented, sustained strikes over allegations it harbours militants executing attacks on Pakistan from its soil. The Taliban has denied aiding militant groups.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Tuesday that successful air strikes were conducted on the Bagram air base north of Kabul, which served as a key American command centre through the 20-year Afghan war.

“We had intelligence that there was ammunition and critical equipment being used by terrorists to fight the Pakistan army along the border as well as by Afghan Taliban troops,” Tarar told Reuters in the first official Pakistani acknowledgement of the strikes.

Afghan police had said on Sunday that the attack on Bagram was repelled by anti-aircraft guns.

A senior Pakistani security source said the air strikes would continue until Afghanistan took concrete steps to deal with militants using its territory.

If such steps were not taken, Pakistan could target the Taliban’s top leadership, the source said. (Reuters)

Drones hit US Embassy in Saudi Arabia forcing staff evacuation

Suspected Iranian drones have struck the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said early Tuesday, as the United States orders all non-emergency personnel to evacuate Bahrain and Kuwait amid Tehran’s continued retaliation strikes targeting US assets and Israel.

Two drones struck the embassy, igniting “a limited fire” and causing “minor material damage” to the building, the ministry said in a statement.

The embassy confirmed in a statement that it had been attacked, urging people to avoid the facility. It said the mission was closed on Tuesday, and urged US citizens throughout Saudi Arabia, but especially in the cities of Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran, to shelter in place.

The Saudi Defense Ministry later said it had intercepted and destroyed eight drones near Riyadh and Al-Kharj.

Asked what the US response to the attack would be, President Donald Trump told NewsNation, “You’ll find out soon.”

Saudi Arabia is a US ally and home to several American assets, including the US Embassy and Prince Sultan Air Base, as well as other US military facilities.

Since the United States and Israel began attacking Iran early Saturday, the Islamic regime has launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Israel as well as US assets throughout the region.

Along with Saudi Arabia, Iran has attacked Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. At least six US service members have been killed so far, all in Kuwait, where three US fighter planes were also downed by Kuwait’s aerial defense weapons system in what is being called friendly fire.

The State Department on Tuesday ordered non-emergency US government personnel and their families to leave Bahrain and Kuwait, according to statements published by their respective embassies.

On Tuesday, the State Department urged Americans throughout the Middle East to leave.

In a 4 p.m. EST statement from Assistant Secretary Mora Namdar, Americans in 14 Middle Eastern countries were told to “DEPART NOW.” (UPI)

Kiserian Adams had a game winning performance on Sunday night, lifting the C.A.M Smart Assurance City United Celtics over the defending champions, Burger King Clapham Bulls, 94-91.

Playing in front of a packed Barbados Community College (BCC) in the Cooperators General Insurance, Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) Premier League, the talented forward scored 11 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter. Adams added 12 rebounds to his effort and had good support from Joel Hunte, who had also had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Theo Greenidge added 12 points.

The matchup was close and the undefeated Celtics held a six-point lead (26-20) over the Bulls after the first period ended. Clapham rallied to lead 48-47 at halftime and there was not much between the two sides by the end of the third (61-60). Adams put on a clinic in the fourth, scoring mid-range and long range shots to keep the points flowing for United.

Rahiim Gibbons hit a jumper from the three-point line with 21 seconds remaining (93-91) but the Bulls had to foul to stop the clock. Deroni Hurley of the Celtics scored a free throw to give his team a three-point lead (94-91) with the clock on 13 seconds but Simeon Maynard missed a game tying three at the other end as the clock wound down.

Push to reduce suspensions

0

A new approach to handling student suspensions is being implemented in Barbados, as the Ministry of Educational Transformation moves to reduce the number of children sent home and to tighten oversight of those being punished for delinquent behaviour.

Special effort will also be made to ensure students return to school when suspensions are completed, and to reduce the time away from the classroom.

All this was revealed yesterday as debate began in the House of Assembly on the Appropriation Bill, 2026, containing the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for the coming financial year.

Deputy Chief Education Officer Julia Beckles said these were part of the Ministry’s plan to ensure that students placed on suspension are not academically disadvantaged and are properly monitored during their time away from regular classes.

T&T under state of emergency again

0

PORT OF SPAIN – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Trinidad and Tobago had been placed under a state of emergency (SoE) effective as of Tuesday, March 3, after warning of credible evidence linking criminal gangs and former detainees to increased crime in the country.

In a statement, Persad-Bissessar said that following a meeting of the National Security Council on Monday, she had asked President Christine Kangaloo to declare the SoE.

“This measure is consistent with your Government’s zero-tolerance approach to crime and criminal gangs, as demonstrated by numerous successful, strategic operations conducted by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Armed Forces over the last ten months, legislation introduced in Parliament to empower and protect law-abiding citizens, and ongoing reforms to the criminal justice system,”  she said in the statement.

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said that following the end of the previous state of emergency on January 31st, 2026, “there has been an increase in violent criminal activity across the country, most of which has been carried out by members of organised criminal gangs.

“The NSC further noted that several of these acts of criminality have resulted in multiple deaths due to mass shootings and that the continuance of reprisal shootings amongst criminal gangs, if left unchecked, would endanger public safety.”

She said that the NSC meeting had received security briefings from the Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, the Chief of Defence Staff, Don Polo, and the Head of the Strategic Services Agency (SSA), Alicia Henry.

“The NSC was informed that intelligence recently gathered indicates credible threats to attack Police Officers, Prison Officers and other members of the security and legal services,”  she said, adding “I had previously warned the criminal gangs and detainees released from prison that decent law-abiding citizens are fed up with their criminality, and if they cannot behave themselves, I would have no hesitation in having another SoE declared.

“I also indicated that violent gang members would be returned straight to prison, and this time, their friends and family who aid their criminality would accompany them. I reiterate my words that if criminals want to terrorise law-abiding citizens and their families, I will do everything legally possible to terrorise criminals and those who aid and abet them.”

Persad-Bissessar said that her government “will continue to utilise all available resources to ensure that the gains we have achieved in significantly reducing the murder rates and the incidents of violent crime against citizens are not reversed and overturned by those who are determined to inflict death, hardship and torment upon our people”.

In December 2024, the then Keith Rowley government announced an SoE which remained in effect until January 31st this year with the Persad-Bissessar administration extending the measure when it came into office in April last year. (CMC)

El Salvador rout Barbados 13-0 in CONCACAF women’s qualifier

0

Barbados’ senior women’s football team suffered a 13-0 thrashing in their second CONCACAF qualifier at the hands of El Salvador on Sunday at the Estadio Nacional Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.

Recalled goalkeeper Kamillah Burke was kept busy throughout as El Salvador finished with 57 shots, 31 on target.

Wide forwards Danielle Fuentes and captain Brenda Cerén led the way in the opening 45 minutes, each scoring a brace by halftime, while Danya Gutiérrez and Victoria Meza made it 6-0 at the break.

Gomez netted the seventh goal in the 54th minute, and Danya Gutiérrez and substitute Jasmine Dybala scored two goals in four minutes to make it 9-0 in the 64th.

The rout continued in the 73rd as the skipper completed her hat-trick. Substitute Jackeline Velásquez, who came on in the 56th minute, contributed a second-half brace with goals in the 79th and 90+4th minutes. Prior to that, Fuentes registered her third and final goal in the 87th minute.

That result, the third-worst of this CONCACAF qualifying period after Jamaica’s 18-0 drubbing of Dominica and Mexico’s 14-0 humbling of St Vincent, leaves the Lady Tridents bottom of Group F.

Barbados, who previously lost 5-0 to Trinidad last November, have no points after two matches, with a goal difference of -18.

Up next is Honduras during April’s international window, while table-toppers El Salvador, with six points from two matches, face Trinidad and Tobago next. (JC)
