Johan Bjorn Bjerkhamn was granted additional leave to continue treatment on his injured hand, when he appeared at the Holetown Magistrate Court today. With his hand still in a cast, Bjerkhamn asked Magistrate Ian Weekes for additional leave to return to Miami where he has been undergoing treatment. The 39 year-old businessman, of Leslie Gardens, Maynards, St Peter, has been charged with unlawfully killing his 11 year-old son Luke.Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Keith Belle, asked Magistrate Ian Weekes for an adjournment in the matter, pointing out that the prosecution was still not ready to proceed with the case. The charge is an indictable offence.Queens Counsel, Sir Richard Cheltenham, who is representing Bjerkhamn, presented the court with a medical report from doctors in Miami and explained that his client was required to be in  Miami from June 19 to July 5, for further treatment.Magistrate Weekes granted the request but he questioned the absence of the two sureties who signed the $100 000 bail on the accused’s behalf.“This is a unique case in that the accused will be asking for special leave to travel for medical treatment and I think they should be here to hear all that is being said because it is up to them to make sure that he attends court”, Weekes stated. However, Cheltenham replied that the sureties will be apprised of whatever transpired. The matter was adjourned until July 19.Bjerkhamn’s son died on April 11 from a gun shot wound to the chest. Bjerkjamn also suffered a wound to his left hand during the incident. For more details on this story, please read tomorrow’s WEEKEND NATION.
