Bacchanal Time calypso tent has once again produced a singer who is doing big things. And all those who this Crop-Over season have heard or seen this fresh find Leisha “Cynna Bunzz” Leach will agree. What you might not know is that Cynna Bunzz is not particularly “new”. She has been a part of the tent since 2004, but has been a virtual unknown. This year Bunzz is making a difference.Tent manager Eric Lewis wrote Bounce It and told Leach she would perform it well.“I loved it right away,” Bunzz said, admitting that she was not “really into it” when she first started out, but has now found herself more focused.“I have started taking singing more seriously. I’m always looking for ways to improve my singing,” she added. The Ministry of Transport and Works supervisor sees her song going far this year because it is “very catchy”. About her daring dance moves, Cynna Bunzz believes they add to her performance.“I am more comfortable when I dance; that translates into a good performance.”She and her back-up dancers rehearse every chance they get. “They come to my house and practise, so everything would flow on the night,” she added. When asked about her biggest competition in the tent, she simply chuckled and said: “People in this tent are like family. So I do not compete with anyone. My main aim is to get the song out there and please the audience,” she said.Cynna Bunnz has some advice for her critics: “Learn to take a load off at times and enjoy yourself.“I believe that my song brings down the stress level; for the five minutes that I am performing, I dismiss all my worries and stresses. Instead of criticizing, drop your guard and learn to enjoy life a little.”Admitting that she is frequently teased about her weight – especially her ‘butt’ – Leisha said she no longer takes it to heart. “I always had weight, and I was always teased. I have learned over time to love and accept myself and my body.“I used to worry about getting rid of some of my butt, but then I realised that some girls are even resorting to buying some (mock botsies). So I am glad for what I have,” she said. The 28-year-old student is currently pursuing psychology and sociology at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, while being a full-time mother to nine-year-old boy Raequan and three-year-old Leianna.Cynna Bunnz wants to pursue a career in counselling psychology, as well as singing. And should this come true, she would be living the best of both worlds.
