Barbados are guaranteed at least a bronze medal after boxer Anderson Emmanuel advanced to the semi-finals of the heavyweight division at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.Emmanuel won bronze in 2006 and will be hoping to put himself in contention for gold or silver when he comes up against Deivis Julio of Colombia in the semi-finals.On Monday, the former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist advanced after beating Mexico’s Ruben Guerrero 4-2 on points in a come-from-behind win. Guerrero scored the first point and was leading 2-1 at the end of round two, but Emmanuel finished strong, out-pointing his opponent to win the third and final round 3-0.Meanwhile, an Alison Haynes strike in the 19th minute against Bermuda also sent the women’s hockey team into today’s semi-finals against Mexico. Barbados finished runners-up in Group A, which was won by Trinidad and Tobago who will take on the Dominican Republic in the other semi-final.Last night, the men were hoping to join them, in a must-win game against Puerto Rico to decide who would be second in the group. Trinidad locked up first place by hammering Panama 15-0 yesterday morning. Barbados are currently second on three points, the same as Puerto Rico, but with a superior goal difference (10-2).Up to Press time, Barbados were leading 4-2.Curthland King had a chance to advance to the medal rounds in tae kwon do, but was forced to withdraw in the quarter-finals, gifting the match to local Juan Sanchez after edging Suriname’s Rodney Wijnalduim 2-1 in the first round. In the under 54kg category, Heiner Oviedo of Costa Rica hammered Ackeem Hurdle 11-1.In tennis, Darian King was stopped in his tracks 6-3, 6-4 by No 1 seed Victor Estrella in the second round of the men’s singles competition. Later, he and Haydn Lewis fought well in the doubles, but they were beaten 6-4, 7-6 by Jose De Armas and Pierro Luisi of Venezuela. In King’s third match of the day, he and Ancia Ifill went down 6-3, 6-4 in the mixed doubles to his former juniors doubles partner Rodney Carey and Kerrie Cartwright of The Bahamas.
