Commission to look at coup bid

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Retired Court of Appeal judge Mustapha Ibrahim will chair a five-member Commission of Inquiry into the attempted coup by members of a radical Muslim group that sought to overthrow the Trinidad and Tobago government in 1990, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced yesterday.She told Parliament that the other members of the commission are former Independent senators Dr Eastlyn McKenzie and Dianna Mahabir-Wyatt, former Barbados attorney general and senior government minister, Dr Richard L. Cheltenham, QC, and international security consultant and United States war veteran Dr H.A Mohammed. Leader of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen group, Yasin Abu Bakr led more than 100 members in coordinated attacks on Parliament and the lone television station on July 27, 1990, hoping to overthrow the then government of Prime Minister ANR Robinson.At least 24 people were killed during the six-day insurrection that ended on August 1.
