Erect proper bus shelter

THE POWERS THAT BE should always be mindful to demonstrate that ours is a caring society.

However, an inhumane situation has arisen from the shifting of the bus stop for northbound commuters, near the Everton Weekes (First Caribbean) Roundabout.

Shifting of the stop was necessary because of a realignment of the road lanes in that area.

The existing spacious concrete shelter was consequently abandoned, and has been taken over almost exclusively by vendors.

A woefully inadequate replacement bus shelter, approximately two feet by six feet, has been installed north of the abandoned one for use by the elderly and other persons who attend the Warrens Policlinic, or conduct other business in this busy area.

On August 25 I saw at least 15 elderly people crammed into this two-bit shed to escape the hot noonday sun, as they awaited transportation to their northern destinations.

The plight of these commuters is even worse when it rains heavily.

I am calling on the personnel concerned at the Ministry of Transport and Works to bring an end to this appalling situation, by providing adequate shelter for these commuters who unfortunately do not have their own cars.

Let us always show that we care!
