New pledge on arch soon

THE INDEPENDENCE ARCH will soon bear the words of the National Pledge once again.
Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce gave this assurance recently.
“The upkeep of that pledge falls under the auspices of the building unit of the ministry. My enquiries have indicated they have ordered a replacement and are looking at mounting it in a more secure way,” he said.
The Independence Arch for many years carried a marble slab on which the words of the National Pledge were inscribed. In July this slab either fell naturally or was vandalised and thereafter it lay on the ground in two pieces.
Subsequently, one of the pieces was taken – apparently stolen – while the other piece was further broken in two.
At that time, no agency or Government department appeared to accept responsibility for the upkeep of the arch and pledge.
Last month, men were seen measuring the space where the marble slab was previously located and carrying away the broken parts, but it was unknown until now which agency they were working for. (CA)
