RAYMON REIFER’S third Division 1 hundred, followed by another feeble batting performance by Old Brigand Dover put front-runners Sagicor UWI on the verge of an important victory in a pivotal LIME Division 1 match yesterday.
Reifer, the son of former Barbados all-rounder Elvis Reifer, led the way with an undefeated 102, as UWI, replying to Dover’s first innings total of 70, declared on 342 for five about 50 minutes after tea on the second day of the ninth round of matches.
Marques Clarke then snared three wickets for seven runs from five overs, Ryan Austin two for eight from six overs, and Moore two for nine from six overs, as Dover subsided to 44 for seven at the close. None of the visitors’ batsmen reached 20.
Clarke bowled Shane Jones and Akeem Crookendale for ducks in his second and third overs respectively, to leave Dover on two runs for two wickets.
Moore added the scalp of Shanaldo Taylor lbw for two in his fourth over, and Clarke trapped Jamar Phillips also lbw for a duck next over, as Dover sank to two runs for four wickets.
Moore, whose five wickets last Saturday wrecked Dover’s first innings, then had opposing captain Sean Armstrong caught behind for eight miscuing a hook at a short, rising delivery to leave the visitors on ten for five.
Shawn Smith, the younger brother of Barbados all-rounder Dwayne Smith, joined Wilbur Bruce, and they stemmed the fall of wickets for about half-hour.
Austin, however, spun into action when he removed them both in the last half-hour – Bruce was caught at slip for 12, and Smith was caught at silly mid-off for 15.
Earlier, Reifer reached his milestone from 122 balls, when he square drove Armstrong – bowling his uncomplicated medium pace – through square cover for the last of his four fours to immediately prompt the declaration.
Reifer also struck a six in his innings that lasted almost three hours, and shared 89 for the fifth wicket with his elder cousin Floyd, and 92 – unbroken – for the sixth wicket with Romel Currency.
The elder Reifer gathered 42, Currency was not out on 44, Omar Phillips, the UWI captain, made 88, and Simon Naitram scored 46, as the UWI top-order batting once again clicked .
