CLAPHAM’S BULLS are Third Division kings – again.
Andrew “Cat” Ifill had a game-high 15 points and the Act II Popcorn-sponsored side secured another basketball league cup after holding Roll-A-Way St John’s Sonics to 11 fourth-quarter points in Sunday’s series-clinching 67-56 victory at the YMCA.
It was the club’s third successive Third dDivision title and fifth overall in the last seven years, with the streak starting in 2004.
But Sonics threatened that impressive run, having led the decisive Game 3 by as many as ten points before holding a slim 45-41 lead heading into the fourth.
However, Reynold “Shaggy” Layne and Carlos Griffith scored eight points apiece in the period, while Roger Christie locked down the paint at the other end to blow open the contest.
Dadree Gibson accounted for all but two of Sonics’ points in the fourth as they got nothing outside of their burly forward.
Layne and Ifill finished with 12 and 11 points respectively, while Junior Rock added a further ten. For the Sonics, Bernard Howell topscored with 14 and Gibson ended with 13. (JM)
