NEW DELHI – Remaldo Rose’s stumble at the finish cost Jamaica gold in the men’s 4×100 metres relay at the 19th Commonwealth Games here Tuesday.
The Caribbean powerhouses seemed en route to top spot on the podium when Rose led in the last 100 metres, but with Britain’s Mark Lewis-Francis closing in quickly, Rose stumbled near the line to gift the British gold.
Jamaica were second in 38.79 seconds with Britain taking gold in 38.74. India were third in 38.89 seconds.
Jamaica seemed to have the race sewn up when Rose took the baton about five yards ahead of Lewis-Francis and sped towards the finish.
Lewis-Francis, however, who won gold in the same event at the Athens Olympics six years ago, ran a brilliant final leg to upset the form book.
The Bahamas were fifth while Trinidad and Tobago failed to finish.
Victory for Britain meant the sprint relay double for the Union Jack after the women had earlier won their event in 44.19 seconds, with Jamaica disqualified.
In the men’s 4×400 relay, The Bahamas missed out on a medal when they finished fourth as Australia took gold in three minutes, 03.30 seconds.
There was more disappointment on the field for the Caribbean as Jamaican Wilbert Walker finished fifth in the triple jump, with Grenadian Randy Lewis sixth in the event won by Nigerian Tosin Oke with a leap of 17.16 metres. (CMC)
