EVERYTHING WENT ACCORDINGto plan for Barbados’ dominoes.
Recapturing regional supremacy doesn’t happen by fluke.
The ultramarine and blue slammers fulfilled their pre-tournament destiny, co-ordinating a full team effort by capturing three of the eight categories on offer while also getting three other second-placed finishes to dethrone hosts St Lucia at the recent 14th World Dominoes Championship.
“We went down as a team with one thing in mind – to regain the championship,” said assistant manager Sharon Hunte.
“Two years ago we were defending but this year we were more focused because we believe that the title is rightfully ours and ours alone.”
The overall victory was set up after copping the top spot in the team four-hand event, before Barbados went on to win the female and mixed pairs, finishing first with 15 points ahead of Antigua (12) and St Lucia (9).
“I am extremely pleased with the four-hand team because we swept all the matches in a truly first-class performance,” added Hunte. “We stayed focused and concentrated on the task at hand.”
Sherry Ann Dawson, the runner-up in the Queen Domino, paired with Susan Jean Baptiste to win the women’s pairs. Hamilton Durant and Charmaine Carter did likewise in the mixed pairs category.
Dennis Nowell and Peggy Brewster-Harry were second in that same division while Barbados were second best in the men’s three-hand as well. (PR/JM)
