Refinance the public debt, get stalled projects going and keep your promises.
These were among the suggestions which Leader of the Opposition, Owen Arthur, had for Government today.
Responding to the Budget presented on Monday by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, Arthur urged Government to “stop quarreling about the debt and do the debt refinancing”.
He said Government had been complaining that there were some things it could not do because with the large debt it did not have space in which to manoeuvre.
He said once Government refinanced the debt it would give itself the “fiscal space” to manoeuvre.
Arthur charged that the budget presentation took place against the backdrop of several Government promises of concessions and major projects to help agriculture, oil, tourism and other sectors.
“Nothing has been done,” Arthur repeatedly said, as he listed many proposed projects.
