Market still standing

Demolition of the Fairchild Street market, scheduled for today, has been postponed “until further notice”.
A Ministry of Transport and Works press release gave no reason for the postponement, but vendors are ‘fine’ with the move.
While most of the people THE NATION spoke to today said they would like to see the old market go, they also said this was not the time to do it.
The Fairchild Street market was once the heart of vending in The City but has fallen into disrepair, thus prompting Government to announce its closure.
A temporary market has been built in Probyn Street to house dislocated vendors who previously operated inside, while vending continues in front of the market.
Over time, the abandoned market has become a home for rats and vagrants as well as a dumping ground. (CA)
