THE CARIBFEST Awards got off to a blazing start last Sunday night.
It turned out to be a belated New Year Fete when Timeless Barbados presented the first of what is expected to be an annual event to honour artistes from across the region. And based on the screams and the unrestrained dancing, members of the audience enjoyed their evening out.
The regional mix came from Sabrina Estwick, Tesanne Chin, Rosemary Phillips, Tamika Marshall, Christal Cane, Jaydene, Peter Ram, Edwin, Skinny Fabulous, Alison Hinds, Kassav, Wayne Wonder and Ria Borman.
Even if the entertainment was not up to par, some would have been quite satisfied just to get a glimpse of hosts Vivica Fox and Morris Chestnut, and, for some of the more fortunate, pictures and kisses from one or both of them.
After show producer Ronnie Morris announced Fox, who in turn brought out Chestnut. It took quite a while for the ear-splitting screams to stop and the show to continue.
Dance tributes were paid to Jamaica’s Bob Marley, Jackie Opel of Barbados, Lord Kitchener of Trinidad and Cuba’s Celia Cruz and, in between performances, five acts were presented with Caribfest Awards. The fine voices of Faithful Few, from Bethlehem Moravian Church, charmed the audience for the second straight night when they sang the National Anthem.
Those receiving the 2011 Caribfest Awards were: Tesanne Chin – Award Of Excellence Alison Hinds and Square One – Lifetime Achievement Award.
Edwin and krosfyah – Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kassav – Lifetime Achievement Award.
