Haynes House are champions at The Alleyne School for the fifth time in seven years.
With 872 points at the inter-house track and field championships yesterday at the Lakes ground in St Andrew, Haynes (Red) won back the title they held from 2005 to 2008, denying Cumberbatch (Green) a hat-trick in the process.
Alleyne (Blue) were second with 854, Cumberbatch slipped to third with 818 and Read (Yellow) brought up the rear with 723.
Leading the charge for Haynes was the speedy Jahvere Worrell in the Under-17 division. He clocked 11.15 seconds (hand times) in the 100 metres, slamming the field, with his closest competitionm a distant second in 12 seconds.
He was equally dismissive in the 200 metres in 23.38 seconds and cruised to victory in the 400 metres in 51.49 seconds. Ramar Henry of Read was second in 56.69 seconds and Pius Emilien, also of Haynes was third in 56.75. Worrell was second in the javelin, long jump and shot put and third in the discus. Emilien won the 800 metres in 2:21.25.
Haynes also got a big contribution from their top female athlete Adrienne Bynoe who had 67 points, dominating the Under-20 division on the track. She had a little scare, clutching at her left hamstring and hobbling over the line in the 200 metres, but was back to lead the team to victory in the 4×100 metres.
Shaquita Husbands of Alleyne took the victrix ludorum honours with 70 points in the Under-20 division. She was second in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 behind Bynoe; was also runner-up in the long jump, discus and javelin and was third in the shot put.
Kedane Pollard of Read was the victor ludorum for the second successive year. Now in the Under-15 division, Pollard won all of his events except the discus, where he was second. There were wins in the 100 (12.03), 200 (25.02), 400 (58.44), 800, 1500, shot put and long jump (5.43 metres).
Terrell McCollin won the 800 metres in 2:33.55.
Other strong performances were turned in by Sade Sargeant of Cumberbatch in the Under-17 division. She won the 100, 200, 400 and long jump and was fifth in the discus; while housemate Meshunda Graham stepped up to the Under-15 division, winning the 100 (14.02), 200 (31.41), 400 (1:13.14) and the 800 in 3:15.19.
Four records, all in the field, were broken by two athletes. Dario Smith of Haynes is now in the record books for both the Under-17 Boys’ discus and shot put. The old shot put record of 11.62 metres by Mario Small was raised to 12 metres flat, and Smith threw 38.51m in the discus, adding ten centimetres to the record set by Shamar Ward.
Haynes’ Vanessa Joseph also struck gold twice in the same events in the Under-20 Girls’ division. Joseph raised the standard in the shot put from 10.60m to 10.84m and improved her own mark in the discus to 34.40 metres.
Many past students joined the celebrations at Lakes where cool breezes tempered the blazing hot sun, and announcer Wayne “Poonka” Willock kept all entertained with his lively and sometimes biting social commentary and comments on the races.
