St Lucia’s Prime Minister Stephenson King said that country is collaborating with Trinidad on the issue of protecting the island’s borders.
King told journalists on Wednesday that two radar systems have been secured from Port-of-Spain to help detect vessels with illegal supplies.
The Prime Minister also presented a progress report on other measures being deployed against crime such as the sourcing of lawmen from the New York Police Department (NYPD) to join their local counterparts.
He said an initial approach made to the NYPD was followed by a formal request from St. Lucia diplomatic officials based in the USA.
“We have been speaking to the Commissioner (of Police) in New York who has indicated his willingness to participate, and that his men are eager to do the exchanges and assist us here,” King said.
“We have now gone to the Federal Government who will channel the request to the precinct and make the necessary arrangement for the men to come to St. Lucia.
King said that assistance was also being sought from Israel in a number of areas including training in crime scene management and intelligence gathering, and announced that Israeli’s roving Ambassador was currently visiting Castries for talks with the country’s National Security Minister. (CMC)
